Under The Needle: June 1-15

Sigur Rós — Valtari
www.sigur-ros.co.uk
XL Recordings

Valtari is the 6th album from Iceland’s Sigur Rós.  The album title means steamroller in English.  Personally, I didn’t feel that I was being steamrolled while listening to the album.  I actually felt like I was being transported into some mystical cloud land.  This is an amazing and beautiful record that I cannot get enough of.  Please do yourself a favor and pickup some vinyl — Sigur Rós — Valtar

Hopefully you didn’t sleep on getting tickets to their 8/8 show in Seattle @ The Paramount because that is a SOLD OUT affair.  They are also playing down at Edgefield in Troutdale, OR.  This will be my first live experience with this band and I cannot wait.

Whirr — Distressor [reissue]

Graveface Records

This sextet from the Bay Area makes loud music.  I love loud music.  I love Whirr :)  Graveface Records is reissuing their album “Distressor” complete with demos and new artwork.  This is a wicked album and will be dropping on 6/19/2012.  I enjoy Graveface’s description of Whirr:

“Whirr’s spirit rejuvenates the ’90s shoegaze sound, providing a widescreen update for the post-millennial era. A wall of lush guitars, breathy vocals, dreamy synth and thunderous drumming send the listener to a picturesque realm. Instantly catchy melodies and emotional, enveloping atmospheres hang fully in balance. The sound of Whirr is a total crush when texture, volume, bright pop melodies and dense guitar noise fuse perfectly.”

Put your pre-orders in now because you will want to have this in your collection —> Whirr – Distressor

Lava Children — S/T
Lava Children’s Myspace
Graveface Records

My god.  I love this album.  So far I have only been able to listen to it MP3 style and I cannot wait until I get this vinyl because it will be even more amazing.  It is set to release on 6/19/2012.  Yet again, I will defer to Graveface for their description:

“The Tulsa-based band, comprised of guitarist/vocalist Sherri West, guitarists Taylor Clark and Ben Kindell and drummer Peter Tomshany, draws on the nostalgic sounds of cave rock and the acid-drenched psychedelia of the 60s. Yet, their sound is full of unusual, personal and confusingly beautiful stylings that refuse to let the band be pigeonholed as mere throwback rock. The Lava Children’s self-titled full length is a beautiful and mysterious auditory fantasy.”

CALLmeKAT — When Owls Are Out

CALLmeKAT is Danish musician, composer and singer Katrine Ottosen.  She released “When Owls Are Out” in 2010 and it is known as a “hidden drawer album”.  Not sure exactly what that means but if it is supposed to mean what it sounds like then I guess sexy alternative psych-pop.  I became aware of this artist via email from somebody promoting her Seattle show (Thanks Lallie!).  I urge anybody in the area to see this act.  You can get this album digitally over here for $12 —> CALLmeKAT – When Owls Are Out

If you are in the Pacific Northwest you have a couple of chances to catch her open for Rocky Votolato:
June 8th BOISE @ NEUROLUX
June 9th SEATTLE @ NEUMO’S
