Under The Needle is just an outlet for us to share what we have been listening to over the past couple of weeks that are relatively new (to us at least). The goal is to shed light on artists/albums that maybe you haven’t heard of before and with any luck maybe you will dig.
We listen to pretty much any style/genre of music. People should never be ashamed of what it is that they do like. Branch out and give something new a try. If you do like something, support these artists and buy their albums!
Gaytheist — Stealth Beats
Gaytheist’s Label Page
Good To Die Records
I only received this album yesterday and have already played it 3 times. Portland’s Gaytheist put on a stellar performance last weekend at Club 21 (PDX) and upped my already high anticipation for the release of Stealth Beats. This album sounds so crisp and Jason Rivera’s lyrics really stand out. When we saw them live he was a kick ass lead singer but due to my drunken rock out dancing I didn’t really listen to what he was saying. The bass lines and guitar work pack the same raw power punch you crave from their live performance. Nick Parks is a really good drummer….don’t know what else to say about that man. WOW! Anyways, this album is highly likely to be in my top 10 favorites of this year and everyone should give it a try!

El-P — Cancer For Cure
El-P Facebook Page
El-P is one hell of a producer. After the megamix releases that he put out in 2010 I was a happy camper but still was craving some El-P verses. It was worth the wait though. Cancer For Cure was bumping for our entire honeymoon and didn’t stop there. Once we got back to Bellingham the vinyl has been spinning like crazy. This album has heavy hitters from top to bottom with smart, angry and insightful lyrics. El-P never disappoints but this one may be my favorite yet . Tigon — Infinite Teeth
The Ghost Is Clear Records / New Atlantis
We were lucky enough to catch San Francisco’s Tigon last night at The Shakedown (Bellingham). Infinite Teeth brings you up and down and back and forth. It will have you feeling hypnotized in stretches and then smash your face with devastatingly energetic breakdowns. Love it. Buy your copy over here —> Tigon – Infinite Teeth
Catch them live tomorrow night (8/17) @ The Black Lodge (Seattle)
Omar Rodriguez Lopez — Octopus Kool Aid
Omar’s Label Site
Rodriguez Lopez Productions
I am a sucker for pretty much anything that Omar Rodriguez Lopez puts out. He is one of the most creative, interesting and talented guitarists out there in my opinion. He never stays in the same place. With Octopus Kool Aid he has the vocal talents of another person that I am a sucker for….that is the one, the only Terri Gender Bender (Le Butcherettes). Don’t want to forget to mention that Marcel Rodriguez Lopez had a hand in this as well. This album is quite a trip. Brings me back to the first time that I heard Portishead in a sense but not really. Just give it a try and make your own opinion. This album will be getting a vinyl release in November 2012. You can buy the digital download from bandcamp below or physical CD over here —> Omar Rodriguez Lopez – Octopus Kool Aid
You can see Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group feat. Terri Gender Bender on 10/19 @ The Triple Door (Seattle)
Territory — Sic Semper Tyrannis
Territory’s Label Page
So far I have listened to this album driving, doing dishes, cleaning, sitting on the computer and drinking. It makes pretty much anything that you are doing 20x more intense. It feels like a progressive hardcore journey through an apocalyptic version of our Earth. These guys are from Tuscon, AZ which means we should have a chance to see them live in the PNW someday. You can bet I will be there. You can download the album for free HERE or you can buy the album on wax (which I recommend) over here —> Territory – Sic Semper Tyrannis
